Applications for our Fall 2022 - Spring 2023 Staff are open until Sunday, September 11th, 2022 at 11:59PM EST

All decisions are sent mid-September, but the sooner you apply the longer we have to review your application!

Applying for Charcoal staff can be competitive, so please keep in mind that our decision is not reflective of your character.

Feel free to apply for more than one role, but we typically only offer for 1-2 positions upon acceptance.

Applications that do not follow instructions will not be considered, so be sure to read everything thoroughly. 

 

Charcoal Magazine is a student-run multimedia publication consisting of Boston University students. These are not paid positions.

Head of Finance

The Head of Finance will organize, manage, and assist in the approval of all publication operations directly pertaining to our financial spendings. The Head of Finance will most often be working with the Operations, Creative, and Marketing teams, and will be consulting on different financial pieces with them to help tangibly achieve different initiatives around Charcoal in a timely, cost effective manner. They work closely with the Editor-in-Chief for final approvals, budget reports, budget pitches, etc.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Administrative Assistants

Administrative Assistants operate as direct assistants to the Editor-in-Chief, assisting in numerous day-to-day/large-scale initiatives in organizational, human resources, and administrative areas of work. This consists of facilitating HR care across the publication with the support of the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground through different internal bonding activities & events, scheduling meetings, submitting room reservations, reviewing equipment checkout requests, helping build presentation decks, etc. Administrative Assistants attend E-Board meetings on a rolling schedule to take minutes.

 

Executive

 

Community Relations Manager

The Community Relations Manager assists with the logistics behind larger and smaller projects such as crafting Master Documents, planning catering orders and facilities requests, etc. They assist largely with Crafts and Chats and other more intimate events/opportunities, as well as assisting managing the space, lunch breaks, and Production Assistants during photo/video shoot projects to ensure we make the best use of the space and time.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Production Assistants

Production Assistants are expected to aid with planning and execution of Charcoal photo and video shoots, as well as events such as Charcoal launch parties and community events/activities, and collaborations with other art collectives of similar values. Productions Assistants will also be working closely with the Community Relations Director in overseeing general productions.

Operations

 

Editorial Associate Editor

The Editorial Associate Editor is the other primary editor for written content for Charcoal’s print publications. The Editorial Associate Editor is expected to work with Staff Writers and Editorial Copy Editors during the revisionary and brainstorming process. They are expected to be familiar with AP Style writing and have a background in editing.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Editorial

Editorial Copy Editors

Editorial Copy Editors are essential editors for written content that goes online and in print for Charcoal. Copy Editors are expected to work with Writers during the revision process and may be tapped on to edit any written content for Charcoal to ensure continuity of our brand, depending on the team they are working on.

Editorial Staff Writers

Editorial Staff Writers are expected to pitch and write content that goes online and in print for Charcoal. You will be expected to craft written work for print (primarily) and online (secondarily) publications. As a writer, you will work with the rest of the Editorial Team editors and the Managing Editor during the revision process. Stories may range from interviews to community events, profiles, personal narratives, etc.

 

Online Associate Editor

The Online Associate Editor assists the Acquisition Editor maintain our storytelling standard and reach on Charcoal Connect. They assist with maintaining storytelling quality, intention, and deadlines set for Online Staff Writers, and Online Editors. They manage contributing storytellers that submit to Charcoal Connect.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Online Copy Editors

Online Copy Editors are essential editors for content that goes onto our blog, Charcoal Connect. Online Copy Editors are expected to pitch content and work with Online Writers during the revision process to enhance the value of the storytelling while maintaining the identity and intent of the writer’s vision.

Online Photo Journalists

Online Photo Journalists are expected to pitch and shoot stories for our online publication, Charcoal Connect. As an Online Photo Journalist, you will work with the rest of the Online Team photo journalists, editors, and the Acquisition Editor during the revision process. Stories may range from interviews to community events, profiles, personal narratives, etc.

Online Staff Writers

Online Staff Writers are expected to pitch and write stories for our online publication, Charcoal Connect. As an Online Staff Writer, you will work with the rest of the Online Team photo journalists, editors, and the Acquisition Editor during the revision process. Stories may range from interviews to community events, profiles, personal narratives, etc. 

Online

 

Director of Photography

With their technical experience with photography and organizational skills, the Director of Photography leads communications and development of photographers by guiding them in the shoot development process in aspects like lighting, shoot angles, location management, etc. The DOP assists with location scouting as needed.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Director of Videography

With their technical experience with videography and organizational skills, the Director of Videography leads communications and development of videographers by guiding them in the shoot development process in aspects like lighting, shot lists, editing, etc. The DOV assists with location scouting as needed.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Creative

Modeling Manager

With their experience in modeling and organizational skills, the Modeling Manager leads communications and development of models by working with them to expand their capability to perform, and ensuring their comfort, safety, and interests by meeting with them to physically and mentally prepare before, during, and after magazine shoots.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Head of Makeup

With their experience in makeup and organizational skills, the Head of Makeup leads communications and development of makeup artists by guiding them in the shoot development processes in all aspects related to the makeup looks for each of our models. The Head of Makeup helps ensure that the materials needed to accomplish each look are present and organized throughout shooting days.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Fashion Editor

With their experience in styling and organizational skills, the Fashion Editor leads communications and development of fashion stylists and hair stylists by guiding them in the shoot development processes in all aspects related to the clothing, hair/head-area looks for each of our models. The Fashion Editor helps ensure that the materials needed to accomplish each look are present and organized throughout shooting days.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Photographers

Photographers may be assigned to projects documenting behind-the-scenes content, photographing and editing creative shoots, pitching ideas, and more. They will be expected to meet production deadlines, working closely with the Creative Directors and Director of Photography, and be present at Creative Team meetings, as well as all shoots assigned.

Videographers

Videographers will create all video content assigned to them and based on their own creative intuition. Their main role is to help document behind-the-scenes content, but they’ll work closely with the Creative Directors and Director of Photography throughout development periods for various projects.

Models

Charcoal Models are a part of numerous photo and video shoots for both our online and print content, in execution and the general creative process. No professional experience is necessary! Whether it’s body size, ability, or anything else–we welcome all people of color to model for Charcoal Magazine. Models are expected to attend bi-weekly creative team meetings, photo and video shoots they are assigned to, as well as any pre-shoot logistics meetings.

Note: People come in all sizes, disabilities, features, & complexions. All of them have a place at Charcoal Magazine.

Makeup Artists

Makeup Artists work directly with the Head of Makeup in creating looks for a variety of print Charcoal productions and other projects. No professional experience is necessary! Makeup Artists are expected to attend photo and video shoots, as well as any pre-shoot logistics meetings they are doing makeup for.

Fashion Stylists

Fashion Stylists work directly with the Fashion Editor in styling outfits for a variety of print Charcoal productions and other projects. No professional experience is necessary! Fashion Stylists are expected to attend photo and video shoots, as well as any pre-shoot logistics meetings they are styling for.

Hair Stylists

Hair Stylists work directly with the Fashion Stylist in styling hair for a variety of print Charcoal productions and other projects. No professional experience is necessary! Hair Stylists are expected to attend photo and video shoots, as well as any pre-shoot logistics meetings they are styling for.

 

Art Production Manager

The right hand to the Art Director, assisting in the organization of the team when deadlines are made and met, as well as organizing the various designers across the numerous spreads we will be developing. They also help the teaching of design programs, formatting essentials and larger design language we are intending for the book as a whole.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Layout Artists

Layout Designers craft the layouts of Charcoal Magazine’s print issues while working directly with the Art Director and Art Production Manager. Layout Designers work with different members of the Editorial and Creative teams to elevate the intention behind our shoots/written work through compositional storytelling.

Design

 

Marketing Manager

The Marketing Manager helps oversee all general content strategy work, with a focus on Charcoal’s PR area through relationship building & strategic branding. They also work with the Online Associate Editor to ensure Charcoal media channels are promoting Charcoal Connect stories creatively, and on schedule.

At least 1 season as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

Content Strategists

Content Strategists are expected to strategize and execute marketing work for the Charcoal Magazine brand and maintain our social channels to engage and grow our audience with the rest of the Marketing Team and Marketing Director. Members of the Marketing Team meet roughly once a week to develop creatively inspired content, campaigns, media kits, etc. to further expand and improve our online presence.

Insight Strategists

Insight Strategies are expected to research and strategize with the Marketing Team by developing trend reports, monitoring media analytics, and bridging strategy to proven methods. Members of the Marketing Team meet roughly once a week, developing creatively inspired social media content, campaigns, media kits, etc. to further expand and improve our online presence.

Graphic Designers

As a Graphic Designer you will create a variety of designs for Charcoal Magazine’s promotional materials for our media channels by working directly with the Marketing Director and Marketing Manager. You will be expected to meet production deadlines and be in constant communication throughout developing designs.

Marketing

You've seen it all now. At the end of the day, there is an opportunity for you to experience Charcoal Magazine one way or another. While we do look for certain attributes in a person's values and skills, at the end of the day this publication is here to help you along your journey of growth both creatively and professionally.
