Applications for our Fall 2022 - Spring 2023 Editorial Board are open from now until Monday, May 23rd, 2022 at 11:59PM EST. Upon reviewal, you may be contacted for an online interview. 

Feel free to apply for more than one role, but be aware that you will only get an offer for one position. Applications that do not follow instructions will not be considered, so be sure to read everything thoroughly

 

Charcoal magazine is a student-run multimedia publication consisting of Boston University students. These are not paid positions.

Director of Operations

The Director of Operations (DP) serves as a liaison between Charcoal Magazine and the Howard Thurman Center as far as event planning logistics is concerned, while managing the Operations Team The Operations Team consists of the Head of Finances, the Operations Manager, and production assistants. The DP oversees the planning of Charcoal events and certain other large-scale affairs, and assists in the logistical support for visual shoots across the publication with the help of their team.

At least one year as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

At least one tangible experience applicable to this work is expected.

 

Managing Editor

The Managing Editor (ME) manages the Editorial Team to develop and produce written work for our print magazine (primarily) and online channels, consisting of a team of writers, copy editors, and the Senior Editor. The ME also assists in the larger editing process of our print publication, along with helping prepare writing workshops for the entirety of staff.

At least one year as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

At least one tangible experience applicable to this work is expected.

Art Director

 

The Art Director (AD) ideates and oversees the artistic vision of Charcoal's print publication layout and designs alongside managing the Design Team, consisting of Graphic Designers and the Design Manager. The AD works extensively with the Creative Team & Editorial Team to expand on their individual work by executing a cohesive  art direction that tell the multi-layered narratives that our issues comprise of.

At least one year as a Charcoal Magazine's staff member is preferred but not required.

At least one tangible experience applicable to this work is expected.

Creative Director

A Creative Director (CD) oversees the creative vision of Charcoal's print publication by crafting and executing concepts with the rest of the Creative Team. Creative Directors manage the Creative Team, consisting of models, makeup artists, stylists, photographers, videographers, Head of Styling, Head of Makeup, Modeling Manager, and the Director of Photography.

At least one year as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

At least one tangible experience applicable to this work is expected.

Marketing Director

 

The Marketing Director coordinates marketing operations for the entirety of Charcoal's brand presence via standardized PR strategies and media relations with the assistance of the Marketing Team. The Marketing Team consists of copywriters, researchers, graphic designers, and the Marketing Manager.

At least one year as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

At least one tangible experience applicable to this work is expected.

Web Director

The Web Director coordinates website updates on a need basis to the primary Charcoal Magazine site (issue pages, general page updates, etc.), along with scheduled updates to our online publication, Charcoal Connect, with the rest of the Web Team. Their team also produce our monthly newsletter, Smudge. This team consists of web designers, digital content managers, writers, copy editors, and the Web Manager.

At least one year as a Charcoal Magazine staff member is preferred but not required.

At least one tangible experience applicable to this work is expected.
